1962 Vintage Hofner 185 Bass guitar Very early model with original vinyl covering
1962 Vintage Hofner 185 Bass guitar Very early model with original vinyl covering. This Vintage Hofner 185 Bass Guitar is an extremely early model. It’s the Selmer equivalent is the “Artist Bass” with minor differences. The Hofner 185 range was introduced in 1962 with red vinyl covering and white binding. Very quickly, Hofner switched to Red cellulose for this model. The Selmer version (Artist Bass) never had the vinyl covering. One other difference with the early 185’s was that they were introduced without the 2 x pickup selector switches. This particular guitar was also supplied with the early Type 510B “Diamond Logo” pickups. It’s a pretty bass, with a 30” Scale and a fairly light body. The neck is lovely. It’s in good condition, with minimal warp (C’mon be realistic! It’s a bass from 1962 without a truss rod). The action is actually not bad and the neck is not twisted. The fingerboard and frets are in great shape. The neck and headstock are bound and it retains the original tuners. The tuners all work well. The vinyl on the body is in good condition. It does have the usual ever-so-slight loosening of the white binding at the top of the body. This is very common and usually down to age. The binding shrinks a little and that’s where the greatest curvature is, so it parts a little. One Volume pot has been changed. The control knob for this pot has been replaced with a Hofner Volume control knob. It all works fine. This Vintage Hofner 185 Bass guitar is supplied with the original case. It’s very worn and the joints have splits. However, it is the original case so it makes sense to keep it with the guitar. Plug this into a decent amp and you’ll go straight back to the 60’s. No need to struggle with the scale or the weight either. Very collectable as it’s a very early one, and lovely to play.
