C19th Small Body Romantic era antique guitar Probably George & Manby, London
C19th Small Body Romantic era antique guitar Probably George & Manby, London This interesting C19th Small Body Romantic-era antique guitar is in the style of a George and Manby guitar. The elaborate banding to the edges and the detailing to the neck and headstock would lead you to George and Manby guitars of the mid 1800’s. George and Manby were a music publishing firm in Fleet Street, London. Along with their music, they sold instruments and commissioned guitar makers to supply them in a particular elaborate style. This guitar has many of the attributes of George and Manby guitars. Playability. Even though it’s around 170 years old, it is in good playing condition. It has had some professional repairs to the usual areas and the guitar is now in a stable condition. The 2.5mm action is excellent and better than most classicals. Overall. This Small Body Romantic antique guitar is a lovely pretty instrument that is not “style over substance”. It actually plays very nicely and offers a warm tone with plenty of volume and resonance. It is in good condition and is ready to be enjoyed. Headstock. Original and without issues. The slotted design with the concave top is typical of English guitars from that period. The Mother of Pearl dot inlays are featured around the headstock and match the rest of the guitar’s decoration. The machine tuners are original and match the original bone rollers and tuning buttons. Neck. It is straight and nice to play. The ebony inlaid fingerboard is decorated in Mother of Pearl dots and further fret markers. The 17 frets have only minor wear and have plenty of life in them. The back of the neck has some very light wear from use. It has a very fine neck heel. Just above the 5th fret (and under the A string) there is a hole the size of a dot marker. It doesn't affect play. It was probably filled with a marker and I will supply some spares with the guitar. If you wish to fill it, then you will be able to easily. The top: Fine grain Spruce top with no issues. The Mother of Pearl dot decoration theme continues with a mastic band and dot markers, together with an inner double purfling, to match the sound hole. The top has been re-finished. Back and sides. They are made of Maple with evidence of professional repairs to an old split on the lower bout and some repairs three cracks in ribs on the left side. The surface of these rib repairs is not completely smooth, but they are sound and a good repair. The back and ribs have been re-stained at some point. Bridge. Appears to be original in ebony with good period correct pins. One pin has been replaced. Case: Supplied in a modern slip case. A superb period guitar and rarely available and priced sensibly. This Small Body Romantic antique guitar probably by George and Manby is ideal for the player as well as the collector.
