Highly decorated Mid 19th Century Early Romantic small body guitar

Highly decorated Mid 19th Century Early Romantic small body guitar

Highly decorated Mid 19th Century Early Romantic small body guitar This is a beautifully decorated 6 string Early Romantic small body guitar. The Mother of Pearl decoration is entirely intact and (importantly) the guitar is unrestored. Unlike many of these antique instruments, this one can be played. The action is at a sensible height and it’s very loud for the size. It is currently strung with nylon strings. The tone is bright but with depth. It has wonderful harmonics. Listen to a short clip here By the shape and size of the bridge, it is likely to be French, dating from around 1850/1860. The bridge retains the original MoP decorated pins. The Rosewood bridge is missing one decorative end to the “moustache”. The top of the body is in very good condition. There is some very moderate play wear to the fine grained Spruce top. The decorative purfling, surrounding the MoP decoration, is exquisitely intricate. The soundhole decoration is equally fine. The sides of the body are well-bound to the top and back. The back centre-line joint is decorated in marquetry to match the bottom of the guitar by the original strap pin. The neck and finger board are in very good condition. The original tuners are retained. This Early Romantic small body guitar will require very minor repairs. The bridge has lifted slightly (although it appears stable now), and you will need to replace the small decorative end to the bridge. on the left side of the body, on the lower bout, there is a fine split measuring about 2 ½”. It is stable. It doesn’t affect the harmonics, so I would leave it. The back of the body has some play wear where it’s likely that a tunic button would have rubbed. This is a fine historic instrument that will only go up in value. It’s decorative, so it would be great to display. The best part is the fact that you can actually use this Early Romantic small body guitar.   Scale: 23 13/16” Length overall: 35 ¾” Body length: 17 ¼” Waist width: 6 ½” Body depth at waist: Upper bout width: 8 ¾” Lower bout width: 11 ½”   It will be supplied in a modern soft case.
