1970s Hondo Bass 4 string guitar

1970s Hondo Bass 4 string guitar, modelled on an early Gibson EB

1970s Hondo Bass 4 string guitar, modelled on an early Gibson EB.

It is finished in a dark walnut shade and has all of the original parts including the bridge plate. It looks like it’s black, but you can see the grain. It all works. The neck is good, with a very slight twist at the headstock. The action is good, at about 3-3.5mm.

This guitar has survived 40+years and it still has the original knobs!

Although Hondo was an American company, between 1974 and 1983 their guitars were produced by Tokai Gakki in Japan. This model is an early one, placing it right within the lawsuit period.

Overall, this guitar is in good condition.

The headstock has a small chip in the paint (bottom right), but the original truss rod cover and tuners are still there. One tuner blade has been glued to the spline just to keep it all original. The Hondo logo has been removed. Presumably a previous owner wanted everyone to believe he had a Gibson EB.

The rosewood fingerboard is in good condition and the frets are fine.

The back of the neck, headstock and the body are all finished in a dark walnut finish, although the body is of laminate construction. There are no big nasty chips but just some normal small scratches.

How does it play? Just like you’d expect. A fantastic time-warp 70’s vibe bass.
